The AON Tower with Night Vision Film

Total Solar Energy Rejection
Solar Heat Gain Reduction
Visible Glare Reduction

The AON Tower (62 stories) in Los Angeles
has 3M™ Scotchtint™ Night Vision Film installed to control heat and glare.

Problem

At 62 stories, the AON Tower, Los Angeles, is one of the world’s tallest buildings. To control heat and glare the building’s management had window film applied to the glass in the 1980’s. Nearly two decades later, the building was due for a facelift because of the flaw of all window films around that time. The film had a purple tint.

Solution

Operations manager David Thompson called in two competing window film dealers to test their products over a two month period. "The 3M window film outperformed the competing film in both energy efficiency and price."
"Night Vision 25 blocks solar heat by up to 59 per cent and UV rays by up to 99 per cent, and it reduces glare by up to 72 per cent, making it one of the top performers in the industry. The same technology that tones down reflectivity, also makes the Night Vision film colour stable, ensuring the colour won’t change."

Results

Preliminary results indicate that the AON Centre will realise annual energy savings of more than $200 000. Other pleasing results include fewer tenant comfort complaints, positive feedback about clearer views – even at night, and a noticeable improvement in the building’s exterior appearance.
